Album Review-Real Life Parody ‘Night Life’

Words by Kelli Walsh

In a genre with fading originality and hackneyed expressions of music, Real Life Parody has turned a stone of its own. Some shudder with the string of syllables sounding out the label “pop-punk,” for it is a genre stapled with studded mediocrity. Well, Real Life Parody has something to say about that. As a band bearing the pop-punk name with undeniable pride, their new EP Night Life is a masterful blend of pop-punk, post-hardcore, and several other interesting components.

For those who are not familiar with RLP, here’s an introduction. The three piece band came together their freshman year of college at University of Hartford, an artist breeding ground boasting large talent from their homegrown Hartt School of Music. The band now has two years of playing together under their belt, and perspires pure chemistry and comfort within their music endeavors. Individually, each member is an exceptional musician. Billy Olsen never ceases to cause heart palpitations with his powerful drumming, pounding every note to the pits of Hades. Nick Martel rounds out the rhythm with his entrancing bass lines and contributes essential backing vocals which add depth and dynamic to the tunes. Finally, Adam Ackerman has proven to be a musical Cervantes, ripping away on intricate guitar riffs while never ceasing  his vocal excellence, switching from scream to melody simultaneously. With each members’ display of deft musicianship, it’s no wonder the byproduct has been so noteworthy. Stepping out of Hartt’s coveted studio, clutching instruments in clenched fists, RLP knew Night Life was the best work they have done thus far.

In regards to the EP, Night Life is as intricate as it is interesting. With exciting vocals and riffs that are more in the same vein as Every Time I Die than typical pop-punk heroes, New Found Glory; the tracks supply an intoxicating listening experience. The opening song lives up to its name, since it is surely a “monster,” and RLP continues to release the beast as the rest of the EP unravels. The record presses on through the stellar tracks, “Whitney Street” and “Polarity,” and hits its climactic point with the title track. The band switches gears to a heavier, faster, in your face track with the background vocals commanding listeners to “cure my curiosity.” The melodic punk meets metal feel is an unexpected yet appreciated twist. The last song wraps up the work in a profound way. The gang vocals proclaiming, “I could stare or I could write a book,” resonates throughout the song, ending the album on a provocative note. Coming in at about 20 minutes, Night Life leaves an unsatisfied taste in my mouth, not due to disappointment, but due to a sheer appetite for more.  Why have an innocuous sip of the stale music in the scene when you can get punch-drunk off of Night Life’s new and exciting music taste? Lend an ear to Real Life Parody, it’s certainly worth your time.

TWIABP’s New Trippy Video

whenever

Yesterday, The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die released their first full length album titled Whenever, If Ever via Topshelf Records. Today, the band has premiered a music video for their single, “Picture of a Tree That Doesn’t Look Okay.” The video is a fantastically unique and supremely psychedelic piece of art. Guitarist and vocalist, Derrick Shanholtzer, commented on the details of the video:

Directed and edited by the brilliant Geoff Hoskinson, a sequence of nature scenes seems to possess unnatural and supernatural qualities. Intercut with stark minimal geometric scenes, this music video expresses a feeling of displacement and alternate realities / possibilities paired with a song about decaying rental property, LSD experiences, and the personification of a decades worth of punk show fliers.

Saves The Day Has An Exciting Announcement

One of the most influential bands of our time, whose music spans across a broad array of genres and whose impacts can be heard within scathing vocals and melodies of fairly new bands arriving onto the scene, has wildly exciting news. Yesterday, on Saves the Day’s facebook page and website, the band announced that its permanent drummer would be Dennis Wilson (Every Avenue, This Is Hell), it is streaming a new song from their upcoming album due out early next month, and, most importantly, it will be embarking on a U.S. fall tour with supporting acts Hostage Calm and Into It. Over It. A statement from the band can be read below:

We’re just gonna tell you everything at once because we’re friends and we just have to let it out. WE’RE DOING A HEADLINE TOUR AND DENNIS WILSON IS OUR NEW DRUMMER AND ALSO BOOM HERE’S A SONG OFF THE NEW RECORD. Yup.

This is our first headline tour in who knows how many years. We’ve been waiting for this. You’ve been waiting for this. Well… wait no more (just till September – but presale is available NOW)! We’re playing oldies, deep cuts, and lots of new jams from OUR NEW RECORD. You all have breathed a lot of life into this record, and we can’t wait to be in these rooms with you, singing the old and new songs together. We’re gonna lose our goddamn shit. You’ve seen some recent setlists making the rounds on the interweb – we’re gonna go even deeper. We’ll be joined by INTO IT. OVER IT. and HOSTAGE CALM on all dates. We picked these bands because we like them and we like what they’re about. Know about them. Go on and say hi, they’re top blokes.

Speaking of Top Blokes, say hello to Dennis Wilson. You may have seen him play all of our 2013 shows with us so far. He’s already been initiated into our little pirate gang, he hits the sound-cylinders with power, and he digs Quicksand, Led Zeppelin, Elliott Smith, and Superchunk. He fits right in. Maybe you’ve seen him drum for EVERY AVENUE or THIS IS HELL? We’re keeping him now. Go on and welcome him into the family! @thedenniswilson

Speaking of family, we’re excited to see all of you – you guys became part of this album and we’ve leaked some snippets and nuggets over the course of us making this thing. Finally, here’s a song we can share with you. It’s called #REMEMBER. Turn it up. Share it. Hug your friends. Take a picture of a dog. Do the gorilla. See you on tour! #PUNKTHEFUCKOUT

Saves the Day’s new single titled, “Remember,” can be streamed on the band’s website.
